Project Overview:
From dinosaurs to time portals, giant alligators and pterodactyls what’s not to love! For the final season of La Brea we integrated type into the scenes as the action unfolded. Each promo showcased an exciting event that gave us an opportunity to create an adventurous and impactful campaign.
Team:
VP Motion Design: Grant Okita
Motion CD: Jesús de Francisco
Designer: Martin Suyra
Designer/Animator: Jacob Vouniozos
Challenges:
Design a creative look that fits within the shows action that still gives room to the exotic creatures featured throughout the season.
Technical Breakdown:
Frame rates and fields. The design felt like the easy part, integrating it into shots was the real challenge. The show was being delivered to us at 29.97 with fields and needing to de-interlace all the shots for rotoscoping, tracking and comping at 23.98, then rendering back to its native frame rate. This project became a heavy lift.
Key Takeaways:
The Creative Director was the key to success on this project, helping bridge communication between the design and editing teams. Knowing what they where going for and finding ways to elevate it based on our skill set. We found different techniques to present the messaging while still leaving space for the action to play out. There where many intense days of problem solving, all leading to a better understanding of how to handle these situations even under tight deadlines.
